In 2011 having realized that scientific fraud was the norm for industry funded work and their key opinion leaders (KOLs), I restarted a new grouping of articles.  The three key areas of focus are medical myths, the harm done by the Western diet, and what to do about it.   All those with a “/r” (for “recommended”) have been posted since 2011.

There is grass root revulsion to the current corporate health industry, with pharma doing the most harm.  The best account of bad pharma is by Danish Prof. Peter Gotzsche in his 2013 book Deadly Medicine and Organised Crime:  How big pharma has corrupted healthcare.  Prof. Gotzsche’s book has won the British Medical Book Award given by the BMA (British Medical Association which is comparable to our AMA).  Further endorsement comes from the Richard Smith former Editor-in-Chief of the BMJ (British Medical Journal) and Drummond Rennie, Deputy Editor of JAMA (Journal of American Medical Association) which are 2 of the 4 leading English medical journal.   The President’s Lecture on YouTube by Harvard Professor Marcia Angell confirms Prof. Gotzsche’s book. Pharma is worse than you can imagine.

The best way to slow  aging for post-menopausal women and men whose testosterone level is below 350 is to take natural hormone replacement—around the age of 65.  [Note, an article on aging and hormones will be up on this site by 12/2014.]  But until then go to Testosterone and HRTThe drop in hormones with age is part of nature’s of promoting death during the 7th decade (a clear advantage in the hunter-gatherer societies).  The use of exogenous hormones send a message to the bodys that the women is premenopausal and the man is younger than 60.

A message for seniors:  as you get older the biological reserves are less, so too is the bioactivity of supplements; thus a higher dose is needed to produce a positive result.  Because the body’s reserves are less, the benefits of exercise, healthful diet, and healthful supplements yield a greater benefit.  Also increasing the benefit of healthful choices is the fact that the risk of chronic and acute conditions such as cancer, heart attack, macular degeneration is much greater:  those interventions which reduce their risks bear a greater statistical benefit.  For example a person who starts jogging at 60 for 10 years will on an average benefit more that a person at 30 years at reducing the risk of heart attack and reducing insulin resistance.  The same increased benefits apply to the taking supplements, hormones, and aspirin.

Big pharma benefits from chronic illnesses.  There abuse of the public is worse than you imagine.  The harm pharma causes seniors is far worse than you can imagine.   For a list of the best of the supplements http://healthfully.org/rc/id21.html

The most important thing to prolonging life is to avoid the worst six; average loss for tobacco 7 years, obesity 5 years, high carbohydrate and low saturated fat diet 5 years, polypharmacy (taking more than 4 drugs) 5 years, recreational drugs 4 years, and sedentary lifestyle 4 years.  Those who feel better physically at middle age are less like to do the worst six.  These negative results are averages from populations.  Thus a person who eats a poor diet is more likely to be sedentary and take over 4 drugs.

There are two sides to measuring life, one of duration the other of quality.  Those things that improve quality also improve longevity.  For a number of reasons, to complex to set out here, hormone replacement contributes to quality of life.  For quality of life, vigorous exercise is best; however, this should be augmented with either female hormones or male hormones.  In fact it seems that women, since there testosterone level drop past menopause, that they would benefit with a restoration of this hormone to a youthful level.  Vigorous exercise improves both quality and longevity a Finish study shows.  A very marked reduction in coronary death of 65% for 2009 Finish male athletes who competed in international competition between 1920 and 1965 in either running or cross country skiing, and died between 1971 and 1995.  Moreover, this group, compared to the general populace experience only 108 deaths versus an expected 189, a reduction of 57%.  A study of senior who ran or did other vigorous exercise, found that death and disability were delayed by over 8 years.

Aging has many causes, most prominent are:  (1) the reduction in performance of the mitochondria due to reactive chemicals produced therein; (2) the braking of hydrogen bonds especially the cystine to an adjacent hydrogen, which causes a modification of the shape of polypeptides and proteins; (3) oxidation and glycation of proteins, and (4) senescence. By making the mitochondria work less (being 25% below thin body weight) a number of animal studies have yielded an increase in the life expectancy of about 25%, thought not in maximal life expectancy.  Vigorous exercise, an aspirin a day, avoiding the deadly three, and hormone replacement are the best ways to extend life and improve its quality.
